| The RYA competent crew certificate means you've learned the basics of sailing and living aboard a yacht. Having the knowledge you've learned to gain your comp crew certificate means you can be a useful member of a yacht crew rather than just another body for the skipper to worry about. If you book on a six-day voyage on the James Cook, that's enough time at sea for us to teach you the comp crew syllabus (as long as the weather cooperates and we get enough time at sea). Here's what you're expected to know to qualify for the comp crew certificate. You could get a head start on learning your way round a yacht by buying the RYA competent crew course notes from the RYA online shop.
